Just woke up this morning (I figured I could take one day to sleep in) and wow – it’s amazing to wake up here! I took those few initial blinks of the morning – the ones needed to make your eyes adjust to the day and to get your mind back in working order – leaning out the grand window, watching topless men rake the beach. I ate the fresh grapefruit I bought yesterday standing in front of the house, toes in the water. And now I am sitting on the front stoop, watching all sorts of people pass by. The best part of the morning is these two little chiens playing on the beach, who have taken quite a liking to me…
How I miss having a dog! It is a terrible feeling to come home to an empty house, no one to talk to, no one to cuddle with, no one to make you feel better when you hear all sorts of strange noises in the dark of night. Dogs do all of these things; they are silent companions that make life so much fuller. And as I stay the whole summer in my big house on top of the mountain, how I would love to have a constant roommate, rather than watching people come and go by myself. Eh… maybe in the Fall…
I am watching the workers prepare for lunch at Chez Camille, the world-famous restaurant that now serves as my neighbor. I need to find myself a job today. After I spend some time on the beach.
I thought about looking yesterday, but I just couldn’t seem to muster up enough French. Not that I tried. I got in my car to drop some resumes at the beaches only to hit tons of traffic leaving St.Tropez. After an hour of sitting idle in the car, I decided I’d try to find another route home. Instead I wasted over a quarter of a tank roaming the meandering streets of Var, but I did find a delicious fresh fruit stand and the Géant Casino to buy lots of groceries. I love how the milk here can sit on my counter, warm & sealed, until August.
Also found a McDonalds yesterday (I know, I ate really well yesterday – ice cream for lunch and MickieDs for dinner) and, because there were all sorts of groceries in my car, I decided to do drive through – and I couldn’t help but to laugh. As I looked over the menu (though I already knew exactly what I was getting – the same thing I get every time I go), I was shocked to read the drink menu and there, right above the coca-cola and orange juice, beer was listed. Anyone using the drive through could order a 1664 in one of two sizes and drive off drinking. It just struck me as odd. Maybe I am too American – I hear it is the French who invented drinking and driving.
I also think its funny that the road signs here aren’t helpful at all. You could come to an intersection, for example, and there will be a sign pointing in two directions. One reads the name of some small and obscure town in the area that may be several minutes down the road, and the other sign reads; “Autres Directions” – so everything else. Sweet.
Needless to say I missed my date last night, not that I really felt like going. Maybe tonight. Depends on how the job search goes, I guess… I’ve already run out of euros!
